I think the #theoryofconstraints is not being taught anywhere near the level it was in the past in higher education. Most professors who gained expertise in #toc have either retired or passed away. Since the founder of TOC, Dr. Eli Goldratt, passed away in 2011, not nearly as many significant marketing efforts for TOC have been happening. We have seen TOC software companies and consultants struggle with losing much of their business since Eli passed away.
I believe that the best-selling novel, “The Goal,” as well as efforts to have TOC taught in higher education are key reasons for its exponential growth in the world. Of course, the power of its focus and dramatic results achieved are the foundation of it being effectively applied in business.
During the past year, I wrote and revised instructor’s manuals for several operations management (OM) textbooks and one on supply chain management (SCM). I was dismayed to discover twhile writing the first instructor’s manual ever for the 5th edition of the SCM book that the book did not address TOC at all. In addition, I had written a TOC supplemental manual for an OM textbook in 2002 that I updated three years ago. When I was writing and revising manuals for that book again this year, I discovered they would no longer be utilizing the TOC manual.
I came up with a plan to do what Eli Goldratt did back in 1997 to offer free 3-hour workshops to various universities in the U.S. with invitations to local business professors to attend this fall. I started a GoFundMe campaign to support this effort. Please do what you can to help make this a success so that many more people will learn about the focusing power of TOC and teach it to the masses.
